Almost twenty years ago, Andy Morris would start a career in racing that has kept him busy since the day he started. On the schedule was a 50 night season and he would continue to make those 50 shows a year as long as he was able. Thunderbird Speedway was one of the first tracks, the at the time 23 year old, would venture out on. He also frequented the Salina Highbanks and West Silom Speedways. Morris has raced full bodied Factory Stocks and Super Stocks, as well as Open Wheeled Modifieds. On 6/1/2018 Morris would win back to back features in his #127 Super Stock at his home track Thunderbird.
“Ive been around it my whole life, I enjoy the camaraderie with the people I meet. I enjoy the challenge of it (racing), I think that’s what I really enjoy about it, is the continued progression of the technology”, Morris said during an interview after the races.
Morris has plenty of memories to recall and some maybe to dream about. “I raced about 15 nights, it’s the only year I didn’t race 50 nights at least, and I won 12 nights out of 15”. The 42 year old recalled when OMS first opened and he would go on to win 10 nights in a row.
Morris loves to spend time with his kids and family when he not at the track. That could include a night out to eat, or staying in and playing some video games. Future plans are to help his kids get into the sport of racing. Next year may be the first year for his now 3 year old son to get in the seat. “If one of my kids likes racing enough, Ill stop racing full time, and help them pursue winning races”.
Track food, well Andy has a whole new take on how to decide who has the best cheese burger. “I like a cheese burger, and what I do is, what ever condiment they have, you put every single condiment on the cheese burger”. Anything goes, taco sauce, mustard, bbq sauce, salt, pepper, mayonnaise, jalapenos, etc.
The only serious statement came at the end of the interview. “I don’t think people are willing to put in the sweatequity into their race cars”. The effort that the sport need to survive has Him worried about the future of racing. The simple statement, “You win races in the shop”, holds true for the 20 year veteran of the sport.
Andy Morris has 2 wins in 2 features, and sits in the #5 spot on the points board in his Super Stock. He also has one top 5, and one top 10 in his A-mod. He seems to have the car dialed into the ½ mile, and a lot of good help behind him.
Your Driver of the Week, Andy Morris.
