KAETER OPENS THINGS UP AT GRANITE CITY SPEEDWAY

SAUK RAPIDS, MN (May 20, 2018) – Tyler Kaeter is one of the up and coming young drivers and when you can hold off a couple of experienced WISSOTA Modified drivers, that makes a statement. That is exactly what Kaeter did in taking the win on Opening Night at Granite City Speedway.

Kaeter started on the pole, but in the dash into corner one, outside pole sitter Don Eischens got a little too loose and looped his car, before being tagged by Jeremy Nelson. The impact damaged both cars, enough to knock them out of the race. On the restart, Kaeter got the jump on Denis Czech and Dan Ebert. The top three set a torrid pace and traffic late in the going tightened things up even more. Shane Sabraski made a late run on Ebert just before the final caution flew with only a handful of laps remaining. On the final restart, Kaeter maintained the lead as Sabraski took over second. Kaeter had enough of an advantage to hold off Sabraski by two car lengths to take the win.

Shane Sabraski is no stranger to Victory Lane and that’s where he parked it following the 20 lap WISSOTA Super Stock Feature. Andy Miskowic led the charge to the green with Sabraski right alongside. By the conclusion of lap one, Sabraski was out front while Dave Mass quickly took the runner up spot. Mechanical problems would force Mass to drop out on lap four. Meanwhile, fifth starting Tim Johnson was putting together a run. Johnson wasted little time in his charge towards the front and soon was in second, trying to find a way around Sabraski. Locked to the bottom, Sabraski protected his turf while Johnson took his familiar high line. Johnson’s arc into the corners saw him bang the wall near the flag stand several times without losing any momentum. Without a caution to slow the race, Sabraski keep the race clean and green all the way to the checkered flag as he took the win over Johnson and Miskowic.

“We started out front tonight and I think that’s where we needed to be to be able to go forward,” said Sabraski about the dry slick track following the race. “We’ve been fighting some issues with the car, but I think we’re getting it panned out.”

Cody Lee made his presence known early and that paid off as he won the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature. Scott Engholm led the surge into turn one, but Haley Lee was the one who was scored the leader on lap one. Cody, her brother, soon after pulled alongside and then took over the top spot. Matt Baker moved up from fifth to take over third shortly before the halfway mark of the race. Baker then got by Haley and pulled in right behind Cody. The top pair stayed within a car’s length of each other the rest of the way as Cody took the win over Baker. Landon Atkinson couldn’t keep pace as he finished third nearly a straightaway back.

Dean Larson, known for climbing the fence following wins, was at it again following the WISSOTA Mod 4 Feature. Things got started with a bang as Dwight Gilyard and Dustin Holtquist made hard contact as they entered the first turn. On the restart, it was Larson taking over the lead, with Bob Holtquist and Justin Pogones in third. Larson slowly pulled away as Pogones and Tyler Larson began a good fight for second. Dean looked to be cruising to a comfortable win. However, the yellow would wave with three laps remaining after Dean Shaver and Dustin Holtquist got together. When the green waved again, it was Dean Larson and Tyler Larson fighting for the lead as Pogones was shuffled back to third. Dean held off Tyler to notch the win and another trip up the front stretch fence to celebrate yet another win.

Kelly Steele proved to be as tough as steel as he won the Outlaw Mini Mod Feature. Starting from the pole, Steele immediately took charge of the race as Andy Zimmerman fell into second. Steele was on a rail as he built nearly a full straightaway lead with only six laps remaining. That’s when Chance Zimmerman tagged the wall in turn four and came to a stop and brought out a yellow. When the action picked back up again, Steele now had Taton Hansen challenging. Steele never loosend his grip on the lead, as he held off Hanson and Andy Zimmerman to take home the win.

Brittany Smith showed the way a good portion of the WISSOTA Hornet Feature and in the end, she came away with the win. Derek Stanoch and Jake Smith fought hard for the lead from the start. Stanoch would then take charge as Brittany Smith and Justin Schelitzche soon moved into the next two spots. Brittany would get by Stanoch just past halfway. Schelitzche made a move late in the going to take second. As the white flag waved, Schelitzche made his play on the backstretch and then in a drag race, crossed the line ahead of Brittany to apparently take the win. However, Schelitzche received a DQ for a rules violation and Brittany was awarded the win.

The next event at Granite City Speedway will be Honor Our Vets Night on Friday May 25th. Racing is scheduled to start at 7:30pm. For more information and to purchase tickets online, go to www.gcspeedway.com
