Billy Dunn Finds Victory Lane For A Second Time In Three Weeks at Can-Am

The mid-summer months are here and the Can Am Speedway drivers were in top form this past Friday night. It was Ladies Night, as a Powder Puff event highlighted a great night of racing action.

Keegan Nier has been on a roll in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman the last few weeks. Nier led the field early over Dylan Moore and Brady Howard and looked to be the strongest of the three drivers. Throughout the entire 12 lap contest Nier was clearly the fastest car on the track as Dylan Moore and the rest of the field tried to stay with him. In the end Nier dominated the race and cruised to his 2nd win in a row and third of the season. Dylan Moore crossed in 2nd, over Brady Howard, Joey Wilcox and Kyle Reif.

Francis White has also been on a roll in the Sundance Leisure Thundercars and this night was no different. White led a strong field as behind him Phil Desormeau was running strong along with teammate Damien Bechler in third. On lap 9 Desormeau was able to power by White to move into the top spot, bringing Bechler with him to 2nd. The top 2 drivers began to pull away leaving White to battle with good friend Justin Pope for third while Steve Smith ran 5th. In the end it was a 1-2 finish for the Bechler team with Desormeau taking the win in his first start of the year. Damien Bechler finished 2nd while White, Pope and Smith completed the top 5.

Veteran Andy Howard was looking to end a winless drought that dated back to August 4th of 2012, as he took the lead at the start of the Whitesboro Plow Shop 25 lap DIRTCar 358 Modified feature. Howard’s lead was short lived as a three car tangle in turn two, bunched up the field for another restart. When the green flew it was Howard in front but Billy Dunn was on the charge and looking for the lead. On lap 6 Dunn had taken over the spot, with Howard, Jordan McCreadie, Lance Willix and Preston Forbes completing the top 5. Once in front Dunn was on auto pilot, but two-time and defending track champion Tim Fuller was on the move from his 12 starting spot. Fuller, who was inducted into the Northeast Dirt Modified Hall of Fame this week, started to make his way into the top 3 with 10 to go, but Dunn had a huge lead on the field. Lance Willix had a great top 5 finish go away, as he lost a drive shaft and pulled to the infield. When the green flew again it was Dunn in control with McCreadie holding on to second while Fuller made a charge to get to the number three spot around Andy Howard. Dunn had a big lead on the field and was running away as Fuller made his way to second, but still had almost a straight away to make up on Billy Dunn. In the end Billy Dunn would put together another solid night and even with a small tangle in traffic on the white flag lap, would go on to record his second win of the year and 61st of his Can Am Modified career. Fuller would record his third straight runner up finish, with Jordan McCreadie Andy Howard and Derek Webb completing the top 5.

Frank Sibley led the opening laps of the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman feature with Remington Hamm and Ryan Shanahan just behind him. On lap 4 Hamm made his way to the top spot and began to put on a driving clinic as he pulled away from the field with Ryan Shanahan moving to second. On lap 10 Hamm had a huge lead on the field and was looking like the dominant car on this night. Tyler Corcoran would have something to say as he charged to the front in the late stages. The three-time and defending champion charged to second around Ryan Shanahan on lap 14, but without a break, it was going to be tough to catch the leader. On lap 16 that break happened as Franklin Mackin slowed with a problem to bring out the yellow. This brought Corcoran to Hamm’s back bumper on the restart, as the field went back under green. Corcoran went right to his favorite lane, the high side, and on lap 17 would make the pass for the lead off turn 4. Corcoran would go unchallenged to become the 7th different winner in 7 events this season. Remington Hamm would record his best finish of the season in the runner up spot, with Gavin Eisle, Mike Fowler and Josh Reome in the top 5.

The evening of regular racing action concluded with a 15-lap feature for the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint cars and it quickly became the Josh Verne Jr. show. Verne would move from his 4th starting spot to take over the lead on lap 2 of the event, with Andrew Hennessy and Michael Cousins giving chase. From this point Josh Verne Jr. would run away to a half-track lead at the finish of a caution free race and remain perfect on the season, with his 5th win in 5 races. Andrew Hennessy scored a career best second over Michael Cousins Tucker Donath and Adam Turner.

Since it was Ladies Night at Can Am, a special 6 lap Powder Puff took place with cars from the 358 Modified and Sportsman divisions being used. Maddy Webb took Derek Webb’s #66 Modified to the lead, but Averi Cunningham charged to the lead in the Remington Hamm #57 Sportsman car as it became a two car battle up front. In the closing laps Jordan Nuffer entered into the picture making it a three-car battle at the end. At the checkers Cunningham would score the win in the Remington Hamm Sportsman ride. Jordon Nuffer crossed in second with Maddy Webb a close third.

Next week it’s the Summer Sizzler at Can Am with 5 classes on hand plus the debut for the Action Sprint Tour East Series on American soil. Series regulars such as Mathieu Bardier, Adam Turner and Lee Ladouceur will be at Can Am to challenge our local stars, including trying to stop the streak of 5 in a row by Josh Verne Jr. The series will return for the final stop on the Eastern Tour on September 8th.

The Whitesboro Plows Shop DIRTCar 358 Modifieds, Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman, Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman and Sundance Leisure Thundercars will all be on hand, while the FABCO DIRTCar Pro Stocks have the night off.

Spectator gates open at 5pm with the first green flag dropping at 7pm. Opening ceremonies begin shortly before 7pm with National Anthem performances by Miss Thousand Islands and Miss Adirondak.
