THE COMBUSTION ENGINE REIMAGINED
One of the great things about our industry is the engineering and innovation on display regularly making race cars faster, safer, and more efficient. To that end, among the more interesting conversations we had at PRI was with the team from LiquidPiston. Based in Bloomfield, CT, LiquidPiston develops compact, powerful, quiet, efficient, low-vibration, multi-fuel capable combustion engines that are scalable from 1HP to over 1000 HP.
With just 2 primary moving parts the LiquidPiston’s X-Engine™ is up to 10X smaller and lighter than traditional internal combustion engines for the same power level.
*Starts with rethinking principles, starting with revisiting the thermodynamic cycle
*Has the potential to be up to 30% more fuel efficient than traditional Otto or Diesel cycles.
*Compact, efficient, and extremely power-dense design.
Plus, they provide optimized hybrid power solutions for generators and vehicles, making hybrid systems smaller, lighter, cheaper, and more accessible.
*In the future, they envision their hybrid power systems using low-to-zero carbon fuels such as hydrogen
*LiquidPiston's multi-fuel capable engine has also demonstrated capability to run on hydrogen, a fuel that can be generated and burned essentially free of carbon-emissions.
Compared to outdated combustion engines, the X Engine features:
*Multi-fuel capabilities, including jet and diesel fuels
*2 primary moving parts vs. dozens
*10X smaller than a comparably-powered diesel piston engine
$30M in funding from the DOD including contracts from the U.S. Army, Air Force, and DARPA.
*4 commercial R&D contracts and 14 DoD contracts
*The military has awarded LiquidPiston over $30M in R&D contracts to develop and install innovative technology into generators and drones.
*Innovations also serve as a potential key enabler for new emerging technologies, including hybrid-electric cars, urban aircraft, and drones.
*Together, LiquidPiston hopes to transform the way we power our world.
