BShepp hangs onto fifth in USA Nationals finale at Cedar Lake

After a few days off to regroup, the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series drew Brandon Sheppard and 27 competitors to Boone Speedway (Boone, Iowa) on Tuesday for the track’s annual Hawkeye 100.

With a fifth-place finish in his heat pinning him on the eighth row for the $15,000-to-win opener, Sheppard lost one spot in the 50-lap affair to finish 15th.

Back with the World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series on Thursday, Brandon joined a stout field of 47 cars at Cedar Lake Speedway (New Richmond, Wis.) for the USA Nationals weekend. Chasing a $5,000 payday in Thursday’s preliminary, Sheppard followed up a heat race win with a fourth-to-second showing in the 25-lap feature. He chased race-long pacesetter Bobby Pierce to the checkers with Ricky Thornton Jr. coming in third.

For another round of prelims on Friday, Sheppard came in second in his heat before moving forward four spots in the preliminary feature to finish seventh.

Rolling off fourth for Saturday’s $50,000-to-win USA Nationals finale via his results in prelims, Brandon ran as high as second before fading to fifth when the checkered flag flew. Despite suffering a deflating flat tire late, Sheppard hung onto fifth, which came behind Bobby Pierce, Hudson O’Neal, Tanner English, and Dennis Erb Jr.

Brandon climbed to third in the latest World of Outlaw point standings.

On Monday, Sheppard remained in Wisconsin for the XR Super Series-sanctioned Superior Showcase at Gondik Law Speedway (Superior, Wis.). With $20,000 prize up for grabs, Brandon followed up a B-Main victory with an 18th-to-9th march in the 50-lap feature.
