Mullens repeats in Sooner feature at Red Dirt Raceway

(Mike Howard photo) John Rittenoure - MEEKER, Okla. (October 7, 2023) - Driving in his first late model event on Friday night, modified racer Tanner Mullens did not expect to visit victory lane and was surprised when he did.

Mullens surely was not expect a repeat of Friday night, but it happened as the Kansas competitor raced to his second Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series on Saturday. This time it happened at Red Dirt Raceway.

Mullens started outside pole sitter Damian Patocka and Patocka led at the drop of the green. But Mullens was able to pass Patocka on lap two and pulled away from the field. Patocka held on for a second place finish just ahead of points leader Brett Hansen in third. Troy Bynum and Adam Popp finished fourth and fifth respectively,

With one race remaining on the 2023 season Hansen has wrapped up his first Sooner Series championship after his third place finish at Red Dirt.

The race for second is still up for grabs. Joseph Gorby took over second Saturday dropping Richard Shepler to third. Shepler trails Gorby by just 40 points going into the final race at Enid Speedway on October 14.

Sooner Late Model Series
The Sooner Late Model Series was formed in 2016 by Enid Speedway co-promoter Mark Brill. Brill felt there was not many opportunities for late model competitors to race in Oklahoma and the Sooner Late Model Series was formed. Now the series has grown beyond the borders of Oklahoma with events held in the neighboring states of Kansas, Texas and Arkansas.
