Schmuhl Steals the Show in Maquoketa
Maquoketa, IA (June 29th, 2025) - After a thrilling twenty-lap feature, it was Hayden Schmuhl who broke through and capitalized on a mistake to capture his fourth Midwest Legends Dirt Series win and his third win in a row.
A very large thirty-two car field was ready to go racing at the track. All but one of the top ten drivers in the championship were on hand. Preston Martin, Ty Olson, and Glenn Mitchell all made their first appearances with the MLDS this season.
Four N&S Towing heat races were first up. Olson surged to the front in the first heat race. Brycen Wilson and Lilly Fassbender battled behind and finished in that order in second and third.
Heat two saw Martin take the lead and have to defend from Cohen Henze. He was able to as Schmuhl and Ryan Sullivan fought for the third spot with Schmuhl getting it in the end.
Jeff Schmidt brought home heat three, having to fight for it. Dylan Manning brought home the second spot with Keith Moline in third.
Heat four, the final heat of the night, was picked up by Glenn Mitchell, who had to duel with Michael Weber and Rob Maule, who finished in the second and third position.
The Fastline Graphics and Design went to Cal Swenson, with chaos behind him resulting in Dave Eberle, Carson Grob, and Nate Werner all transferring through.
After a twelve-car redraw, Fassbender and Wilson were drawn to the front row. The green flag flew and Fassbender got the jump on the field, leading them down the back straight before Martin rushed by and into the lead. Olson moved into the second spot and began to run away with Martin from the field. Eyes turned back to the drivers behind as Schmuhl and Weber began making their way throughout the field. Two cautions a few laps apart drew the field back together and it was Martin, Olson, Weber, and Schmuhl up front. The green would fly and Martin got the jump, as Olson bobbled the restart allowing Weber and Schmuhl by. Schmuhl was strong on the bottom and began to challenge Martin, making the move on lap eleven, taking over the lead momentarily before being overtaken again by Martin and Weber. Weber began to pressure Martin for the top spot on the high line. Weber would break through twice but be drawn back by cautions. Martin continued to lead before a final yellow caused a green-white-checkered. Martin uncharacteristically went to the top on the final restart and Schmuhl was strong on the bottom, pulling by on the bottom. The field saw the white and Martin would try one last time to take the lead, wheeling his #77 up-top but going off the track and hemorrhaging spots fast.
Hayden Schmuhl drove off and picked up another win for himself. Weber brought home second, with Sullivan finishing in a strong third place. The top five was rounded out by Olson and Talyn Neuman.
For the win, Schmuhl was awarded awards from Rush Race Gear and Aero Race Wheels for the win as well as picking up the Professional Plating and Rush Racegear hard charger award after finishing thirteen spots up from his starting spot. For the second race in a row, the finishing spot of sixteenth was picked by Daxton to be awarded a gift from HMS Motorsport, with Connor Carey being picked.
The MLDS is back in action right away at Angell Park Speedway again for the second Sunday in a row. The pits will open at 1:30pm with grandstands at 4:00pm; racing is set to start around 6:00pm.
