Thomson, Young, Shrader, Machado, Mentch, Brown Score Antioch Speedway Wins

Antioch, CA...July 19...James Thomson of Pittsburg won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The 2020 champion was driving the Jared Baugh owned car and led all the way for his first win of the season.

After a multi-car crash in Turn 2 forced a restart, Thomson charged into the lead ahead of Aidan Ponciano and Hunter Hammett, both of Oakley. Antioch's Jewell Crandall slipped past Ponciano for second on a Lap 3 restart with Hammett regaining third a lap later. A Lap 6 yellow flag flew for Colten Haney of Brentwood and Josh Applebaum of Antioch in Turn 4. Thomson maintained the lead on the restart ahead of Crandall and Hammett, but Hammett used an inside pass in Turn 2 of the eighth lap to move into second.

Oakley's Charlie Bryant made a Turn 4 pass on Crandall on the same lap to take third. A lap later, Bryant went low in Turn 4 and grabbed second from Hammett with Crandall following him into third. The final 10 laps went without incident, and Thomson made good moves in traffic to bring home the victory, followed by Bryant, Crandall, Hammett and point leader Grayson Baca of Brentwood.

Josh Young of Roseville won the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event. This was his first win since the season opener as he tunes up for next week's back to school backpack night event for the Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint Series.

Young settled into the lead at the green flag ahead of Marysville Winged Crate Sprint Car star Caleb Ingle and championship contender Anthony Bruno of San Jose. A yellow flag flew on Lap 5 when point leader Bob Newberry of Brentwood spun in Turn 2. Young continued to lead the restart with Bruno and Jimmy Christian of Morgan Hill moving into second and third, respectively. A Turn 4 pass on Lap 7 moved Christian into second. Young set a good pace during the second half of the race and quickly moved past slower traffic to claim the victory ahead of Christian, Bruno, Ingle and Daniel DeKeyser of Kelseyville.

Kenny Shrader of Pacheco won the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. This was the second win of the season for the two-time reigning champion and current point leader. However, the battle continues to be close as his nearest challenger, Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley, finished second.

Joseph Pato of Oakley started a good night with a heat race victory, then set the early pace in the feature race ahead of rookie Alfred Johnson and Al Johnson, both of Antioch. A yellow flag waved on Lap 6 for Tommy Clymens Jr of Oakley in Turn 2. Pato continued to set the pace with Shrader making a big move into second. Ryan settled into third a lap later, and Shrader made an inside pass in Turn 4 of the ninth lap to take the lead from Pato. A yellow flag waved on Lap 12 for Brentwood's Fred Ryland and Alfred Johnson.

Shrader led Ryan and Pato on the restart. During the second half of the race, Shrader pulled away and held a straightaway advantage over Ryan by the time the checkered flag flew. Pato settled for third ahead of Trevor Clymens of Brentwood and Al Johnson.

Mitch Machado of Rohnert Park won the 20 lap IMCA Stock Car Main Event. This was the first win of the season for the multi-time Petaluma Speedway Super Stock champion and the 27th career win for him at Antioch.

Previous winner Mitch Enos of Manteca bolted into the early lead ahead of Machado and State point leader Austin Van Hoff of Chowchilla. Point leader Fred Ryland of Brentwood made an inside pass in Turn 4 of the seventh lap to take third from Van Hoff, and a yellow flag waved for Antioch's Jason Ryan on Lap 8. Enos continued to lead the restart with Van Hoff moving into second, but Ryland went by Van Hoff on the backstretch on Lap 10 for second.

The battle intensified between Enos and Ryland, but there was contact in Turn 4 as Enos spun for a final yellow flag on Lap 13. Ryland was put to the back of the pack for his part in the incident, and Machado was the new leader. Enos charged back into second on the restart and pressured Machado for the lead. Enos went by with an inside pass in Turn 4 on Lap 18, but Machado rode the high side in Turn 2 a lap later to reclaim first. Machado brought it home to victory ahead of Enos, Ryland, Van Hoff and Ryan.

Kyle Mentch of Alameda won the 15 lap 600 Micro Sprint Main Event. This was the second win of the season for the past Dixon Speedway champion.

Mentch led from the outset ahead of Devon Zuffa of Oakley and Aniyah Scott of Brentwood. Mentch quickly built a straightaway advantage, leaving the race for second. New point leader Buddy Chappell of San Jose made a Turn 4 pass on Scott on Lap 10 to grab third. Chappell and Zuffa battled fiercely for second down the stretch as Mentch built his lead to half a lap for the impressive win. On the final lap, Chappell raced by on the outside to grab the checkered flag by inches ahead of Zuffa. Scott and Ryan Dotson of Fremont rounded out the Top 5.

Tom Brown of Santa Rosa won the 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event. This was the fourth win of the season for the reigning champion and current point leader.

Brown led from the outset ahead of Jackie Price and top rookie Ryder Holmen, both of Antioch. As Brown pulled away, the battle went back and forth for second. David Dupuis of Antioch made a Turn 4 pass on Holmen for third on Lap 2 and slipped underneath Price in Turn 2 to claim second on the ninth lap. Holmen moved past Price for third just before a yellow flag waved for Dupuis on Lap 14. This put Holmen in second. As Brown had lapped the whole field, he won comfortably with Holmen holding off Price in a good battle for second. Dupuis completed the finishing order.

Racing continues next Saturday night with the annual Back To School Backpack Night. The Hunt Magnetos Wingless Spec Sprint Tour makes their third appearance of the season, joined by the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks, Dwarf Cars, Mini Stocks and Hardtops.
