Dykhoff Awarded Little Dream

Rice Lake WI, July 29 – In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, after apparent winner Keith Tourville was disqualified in technical inspection for having illegal motor parts in his car, second place finisher Kyle Dykhoff was awarded the win in the thirty first annual WISSOTA Street Stock Little Dream race held at the Rice Lake Speedway.

Not lost in the sudden chain of events that saw Dykhoff awarded the win was the fact that once again a race record top prize was awarded that with fan inspired contributions to raise the purse, Dykhoff went home to Perham Minnesota with thirty one thousand, one hundred dollars for the forty lap feature win.

This race which started with humble beginnings way back in 1995 with the winner taking home seven hundred and eighty dollars, has risen to the point where it is the highest paying Street Stock race in the entire country and drivers from several states and Canada were on hand Tuesday night to battle for the top prize. From its beginnings, this race was inspired by the unique concept that saw fans on hand at the track and now also on line, along with local and area businesses, contribute money to the purse, with all their contributions going directly to the drivers and not just to the winner, but to any position they designated or for any event that happened during the course of the evening. That is what has made this race so special and unique and its calling card. So until just before the green flag flies to start the feature, no one really has any idea just how much the winner and the other drivers will be racing for. And each year that amount has grown, thanks to the generous contributions of fans and businesses and an increasing presence from on line donations from folks that can't be on hand. On Tuesday night, the drivers raced for an unheard of thirty one thousand, one hundred dollars for the win.

After a double set of qualifying heat races, two B Features and a Last Chance race where winner Cody Cimfl opted to pass up on the winning pay to instead race the main event, twenty five drivers would take the green flag from starter Sean Cimfl for the forty lap feature. Keith Tourville, who earned the most passing points in preliminary action, started on the pole and took the early lead over Levi Randt and Dykhoff. Justin Vogel moved to the cushion and started to make time on the top three when two time winner of this race Nick Traynor slowed and triggered the first yellow flag.

Dykhoff opted for the outside on the Delaware style restart, perhaps to block the charge of Vogel. On the restart, Hunter VanGilder spun in turn one which again triggered the yellow and on the following start, the slowing car of Sam Fankhauser again triggered the yellow.

Finally, full out racing took place with Tourville again pulling away from the pack as he moved his racing line to the cushion and that saw him pull away from the field. The battle for second remained intense though, with Dykhoff and Randt running many laps side by side in their matching #11 cars but this time they were joined by Parker Anderson and and Kyle Genett in the battle for the runner up position.

After a dozen consecutive laps were raced under the green, the yellow flew again with twenty three laps completed when Vogel was helped into a spin but he was restored to his sixth place position for the restart.

On each green, Tourville would again pull away from the field as he was showing great speed and no one seemed able to keep up with him. The battle for second raged on though and with ten laps to go, Dykhoff continued to edge out Randt at the line, lap after lap.

With thirty one laps completed, Anderson slowed with overheating problems and that triggered the yellow flag once again. On the restart, Tourville misstepped for the first time all night, getting just a bit high in turn one on the restart and Dykhoff dropped to his inside and nearly drove into the lead. They raced hard for a couple laps but gradually Tourville was able to again edge away.

One more yellow for a stalled car set up a six lap battle for the win. VanGilder, who has spun early in the contest, had made a strong charge back up through the field and now showed up in the top five in the running order.

Tourville got away from the pack quickly and regained a strong lead as he pushed for the finish of the race. The battle for second continued though and on the final lap, Randt got just a bit high in turn one, Dykhoff was able to drive under him and VanGilder continued his charge as he roared into third, edging out Randt at the line for a podium finish.

The apparent victory for Tourville would have been his third Little Dream win and would have put him at nearly seventy five thousand dollars in winnings for this event. However, the top cars were required to appear for tech inspection following the race with an extensive examination of the race winner. Unfortunately for Tourville and for his fans, his car was found to have illegal motor parts that didn't conform with WISSOTA Street Stock rules and he was disqualified from the event.

Dykhoff was elevated to the winner's position with officially VanGilder finishing second and Randt third. Sixteen drivers completed the event with all of them on the lead lap. Jim Gulliksen and Kolton Brauer completed the top five.

For Dykhoff, this was his eleventh attempt to win the Little Dream and in the first ten he had never before earned even a top five finish but it all came together on Tuesday night as he drove a strong and smooth race and was there to take advantage of his racing opportunities.

A huge crowd was on hand for the race on Tuesday on a glorious July night in Wisconsin and FYE Motorsports, who administers this event for the speedway, along with the owners of the track, all want to thank all the fans and businesses that contributed to the purse for it is them that makes this race a great event.

The speedway will take this Saturday night, August 2nd off. Racing returns to the track on Saturday night, August 9th for what will be another big event. The WISSOTA Late Models make their only appearance of the season at the track that night as the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series will be running at the track. A big field of Late Models with travelers who follow the series joined by the best in the area Late Model drivers will make this a memorable night. Along with the Late Models, a full show of WISSOTA sanctioned Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds and Street Stocks will also be in action. Race time is 6 pm and more information can be found at the speedway website at www.ricelakespeedway.net and the speedway face book page.
