Kouba Combo One-Two at North Central UMSS Triple Header

On a night of firsts, it was only fitting that the father and son combo of Jimmy Kouba and Jake Kouba would finish first and second in the UMSS Traditional sprint car feature during the running of the 1st Annual UMSS Triple Header at the North Central Speedway. Jimmy passed Jake on lap seven and led the rest of the way for his second victory of the season and sixth career TSCS win en route to Rock Auto Victory Lane. The Byron, Minnesota veteran racer passed along some interesting information following the race. Jimmy indicated that this was also the first time that he and his son had finished first and second in a feature race. It was Jimmy Kouba's first win at North Central in a Traditional sprint car, but certainly not his first win at the track, as Jimmy won the inaugural Mighty Axe Nationals back in 2002 in a winged sprint car.

A talented field of (19) Traditional sprint cars were on hand at Brainerd. Three ten lap heat races were run with drivers earning passing and finishing points. Heat race winners included current point leader James Giossi, Mike Mueller and Bryan Roach. The top four drivers in points after the heats drew for starting positions in the first two rows of the feature. Jake Kouba and Mike Mueller would sit in row one with Giossi and Jimmy Kouba comprising row two for the 25 lap race. Making his season debut at Brainerd was Mike Walters.

Jake Kouba took the early lead running on the bottom of the track. Jimmy Kouba immediately jumped up on the cushion and began moving forward. The only caution of the race flew with four laps scored when Johnny Parsons III spun in turn one. Jake held the point for two more laps before Jimmy drove by. Jake soon jumped up top and followed his dad with Giossi right behind him. The race ran 21 laps nonstop to the finish, as Jimmy Kouba eventually opened up a comfortable lead. Jake Kouba held off Giossi for second. Cam Schafer drove from 9th to fourth with Rick Kobs in fifth. Rounding out the top ten finishers was Jeremy Kerzman, Mike Mueller, Jon Lewerer, Anna Hippe and 17th starter Scott Brandt. The win paid Jimmy Kouba $500 thanks to some sponsorship help from GRP Motorsports.

The series will have another off-weekend on June 24-26 before returning to action at the Cedar Lake Speedway on Saturday night July 2 for the Fireworks Spectacular. The following weekend will be a big one for the Traditional sprints, as they run with the World of Outlaws at CLS on Friday and Saturday July 8-9 along with the UMSS winged sprints.
