Aikey Dominates in Governor’s Cup Main Event at Davenport
By Anthony Ainslie (Davenport, IA) -- After a three-week break, the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Models East Series returned to action with its second to last race of the year at Davenport Speedway Saturday night.
Round 14 for the East series featured the Governor’s Cup on the quarter-mile oval at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds. A field of 33 late models made the trip for Davenport’s third East Series race of the season. The field included the return of a legend, Ray Guss Jr., who was in a late model for the first time in a year. Guss won his heat and would finish 13th.

A strong field of 22 cars took the green flag for the 40-lap finale. Richie Gustin took the opening lead while Jeff Aikey and points leader Tad Pospisil put the pressure on Gustin for the top spot. Gustin held strong using the high lane in the early laps but dropped lower as the race progressed.
It wasn’t until lap 15 when Aikey got the run he needed on the outside lane, and the Ceder Falls, Iowa driver rocketed past Gustin for the lead. Gustin slipped back to the third spot shortly after following Pospisil getting around him for second.
From that point, Aikey ran away with the show while Pospisil ran second to keep the championship points lead. The race went caution-free for all 40 laps, and it was Aikey taking home the $5,000 pay day. It was Aikey’s second win of the season and his third career Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking/Malvern Bank series win. Aikey also won his first Governor’s Cup title and became the 16th different driver to do so.
Pospisil settled for second while Richie Gustin was third. Jonathan Brauns crossed in fourth but was then disqualified in tech for an illegal restrictor giving the fourth spot to Matt Ryan. Jeff Tharp rounded out the top five.
The championship races are left for the Malvern Bank and Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Model Series. On Friday, October 2nd, the Malvern Bank West Series finishes up the year down at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. Then, the next night, the Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking East Series will wrap up their inaugural season at the Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Missouri.
