Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 4, 2022) – Joey Amantea accomplished a dream last Saturday when he made an A Main during the 37th annual Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout.

Amantea battled more than 350 other drivers before earning a spot into the Non-Wing Outlaw main event, marking his first feature start at the premier micro sprint event held inside the River Spirit Expo Center.

“Every single one of my goals was achieved,” he said. “I wanted to make a show and we made a show. I earned my way into it. I had to run just about every race humanly possible to make it into it so that was pretty cool.

“Really it was the first time we’ve had fun at the Shootout. We were all super pumped that we made it. Now we’re definitely going back next year. I can’t not come back because we just made the Shootout. Next year the new goal is to make both wingless shows and see what we can do with the winged car program.”

The event got off to a strong start for Amantea, who hustled from eighth to second place during his Non-Wing Outlaw heat race last Wednesday. He followed that performance by placing third in a qualifier on Friday. Amantea won a B Main on Saturday before he finished fourth in the Last Chance Qualifier, which transferred him into his first career Tulsa Shootout A Main. He gained one position to finish 19th.

“We changed something we never change on the car and it made us so tight I was pushing like a dump truck in the feature,” he said. “But we didn’t go backward and had some fun and we got a real solid notebook for next season. To be in the final 24 out of over 300 drivers was pretty cool.”

Amantea ended in a B Main in the Winged Outlaw division and he finished in a C Main in both the Stock Non-Wing and Winged ‘A’ Class divisions.

“We weren’t bad, but it felt more like test sessions with the winged car than us having a realistic shot,” he said. “We did make a qualifier, so that was decent.

“I at least proved to myself I know I can make the feature after our strong run in the Non-Wing Outlaw division. I just have to set myself up with better starting position in the future.”
