The First Ever King of the Can for USAC East Coast
NEWS FLASH: The First-Ever USAC East Coast, King of the Can!
Originally scheduled for July 4th, the debut of the Innovative MachiningTechnology USAC East Coast Sprint Cars at Penn Can Speedway was postponed after a devastating storm ripped through Susquehanna, PA. But now, the much-anticipated debut is back on the calendar—and it’s bigger than ever!
“100 MPH Winds… It Changed Everything”
Race director and Penn Can flagger Gary Folk recounted the storm’s fury:
“Yes, 100 mph winds. I’ve lived here my whole life and never experienced anything like it. The scenery of our small towns has changed completely. Places I used to know by heart now look entirely different.”
The storm left many surrounding towns, including the speedway, without power for 5–7 days. But the spirit of the community never faltered.
“Two small businesses, Susquehanna Scoops and Schneider Markets, ran off generators and fed all the line workers and as many townspeople as they could.”
Since then, Penn Can Speedway has resumed racing and continues to rebuild—stronger and more determined than ever to provide Northern PA fans with top-tier racing action.
A Long-Awaited Return to Wingless Racing:
“The excitement for wingless racing is real—it’s something we haven’t seen at Penn Can since 2004,” Folk said.
“Our fan base was fired up to see this show. I think the two most excited people were myself and the promoter, my friend Keith Beach. We’ve been talking about this race for months.”
That excitement now lands squarely on Saturday, September 13th, as the USAC East Coast Sprints return for the King of the Can Weekend—Penn Can’s biggest event of the year.
Crowned in Clay
Series President Ed Aikin shared:
“We had a strong field at Action Track before the skies opened. I asked the drivers if they were willing to reschedule at Penn Can because the promotion team was so invested—and we got a great response. Now we’re part of their biggest weekend of the season!”
This September, one driver will take home the honor of being crowned the first-ever USAC East Coast King of the Can—and yes, a crown, robe and there will be a throne!
