Inside Line Promotions – SIX NATIONS, Ontario, Canada (Nov. 8, 2018) – It was a year of extensive travel and valuable racing experience for Alex Hill as she became just the fourth woman to run the entire Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com schedule.

The 18-year-old competed in all 36 National races, plus more than a dozen other events, while attending college full-time in Los Angeles for nine months of the year. She finished 13th in the ASCS National Tour championship standings and placed third among rookies.

“I’m proud of us running the entire tour,” she said. “It’s not always fun. It can be pretty tough. That’s when support and a good crew are especially important.

“The travel made it kind of difficult to keep up with my studies. I usually flew out of L.A. on Thursday night and came back on Sunday or Monday. It wasn’t usually a short flight since almost all of the races are in a different area of the country.”

Hill was able to spend part of the summer traveling with her team, including a stretch of approximately six weeks on the road.

“I really enjoyed being on the road with the guys during the summer,” she said.

Her season was one with ups and downs as would be expected for a rookie who raced at many of the tracks for the first time. She was aided by her first-year teammate, Sam Hafertepe Jr., who eventually won his third ASCS title and the first for the Hill’s Racing team.

“I enjoyed having Sam for a teammate,” she said. “He’s a good mentor and I was able to learn a lot from him. He has a lot of experience and knowledge to draw from.”

Included in her season highlights were performances at a couple of special events.

“The night before the Canadian Nationals at Ohsweken Speedway was one of our best nights of the year,” she said. “I challenged Chuck Hebing for the lead for a while before dropping back to third. Then I battled Mark Smith for several laps before passing him at the end to finish second. Chuck and Mark are probably the two best drivers back home so it was really fun to race well against them and it helped my confidence a lot.

“I thought we did really well at the Short Track Nationals, too. We had a really fast car. We missed making the main event by one spot, but I thought that was still pretty good because of the size and quality of the field.”

The long season wasn’t without its rough patches, too.

“We had kind of a tough Speedweek when we were involved in quite a few wrecks,” she said. “I lost some confidence and was kind of down on myself. It wasn’t fun and I really wasn’t sure if I wanted to finish the tour, but I’m glad I stuck with it. I learned a lot after that and gained a lot of experience.

“My crew – Daryl Turford, Ron Monture and Sam – are the best and they helped me through the tough times along with my parents, who were at every one of my races. I certainly owe everything I do in racing to my parents.”

Hill expects to return to the track in February during races in Florida, but her racing plans after that are uncertain.

“We plan to race again in Florida, but we’re not sure about after that,” she said. “We’re waiting for the ASCS and other schedules to come out. We’d like to do some 410 races next year and we’ll see how the schedules go.”
