Dixon Runs His Doors Off -- Literally Shereck and Weber Win Modified and Sportsman Features PEVELY, MO. (September 9) -- Ed Dixon needed to run the doors off his late model to hold off Mark Oller and Joe Ross Jr. for a feature victory Saturday night. After the race, the newly-crowned 2000 track champion cut the doors off his car and gave them to fans who submitted the highest bids -- $200 per side -- in a charity memorabilia auction. Oller and Ross hounded Dixon throughout the feature. Coming out of the second turn on lap 19, the three briefly ran side-by-side, but Dixon managed to lead all 25 laps from his front-row starting position. Dixon earlier won his heat and the dash. Darrell Hoffman and Dave Jumper won the other late model heats. Jim Shereck edged new modified track champion Scott Weber to win their feature, depriving Weber of a clean sweep. Weber also had won his heat and dash. Tom Ratajczyk, Ray Walsh and Rusty Griffaw also won modified heats. With 40 modifieds signed in Saturday, two semi-features were needed to set the field for the main event, and those were won by Dennis Richards and Jerry Grither. Paul Belken Jr., who clinched the sportsman season championship last week, finished first in his heat, dash and feature. Doug Wood and Scott Haynes rounded out the top three in the main event. Matt Hancock, Dave Jenkins and Dave Blanc scored heat race victories and Jim Abshier led the transferees from the semi. A memorabilia auction and raffle at I-55 Raceway raised nearly $1,000 for the Children's Miracle Network of Greater St. Louis. The proceeds support St. Louis Children's Hospital and Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital. At the beginning of the evening, six legends from the early days of stock car racing in the St. Louis area signed a commemorative autograph card at the track. Willie Johnston, Harold McLaughlin, Marv Pruett, Kenny Shrum, Jerry Sifford and Don Workman greeted a steady stream of their old fans for two hours. There were 101 race cars on the grounds Saturday night, but the 23-race program that started at 7 p.m. was nonetheless wrapped up by 10:25 p.m. Next up are the 18th annual I-55 Pepsi Nationals on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16.
