Eagle Raceway
Gullion, Richards, Andrews, Blake & Harker are victorious on Fan Appreciation Night
By Greg Soukup
Saturday was Fast and Furious Fan Appreciation Night at Eagle Raceway, presented by A1 Iron. If this wasn’t the beginning of the dog days of summer, they can’t be too far off. But we dirt track fans never let a little heat and humidity stop us. A good-sized crowd showed up as all front gate admission prices were reduced and 135 teams were in the pits ready and raring to go. Where else would you rather be than at America’s Home Track??
There were no serious incidents in the preliminary events.
The first of 5 A Features was for the A1 Iron IMCA Stock Cars. Dusty Blake put his #64 out front on lap 1 with the 292 of Blake Peeler, Nick Beckman’s 22 and the 66 of Jeff Watts rounding out the top 4. Lap 3 saw Travis Patterson pass Watts to put the 17TK into fourth place. Dylan Haney’s 12X got sideways in turns 3 and 4 on lap 8 after contact with the 29 of John Meyer. Haney continued on, but Nathan Landauer’s 11N, the 3 of Dan Jackson and Cash Beckman in the 44X ended up in the infield after they were collected in the ensuing pileup. That brought out the Eastepwheels.com Choose Cone. The lineup was then Beckman, Blake, Patterson and Peeler. Blake grabbed the lead on the restart. Tommy Etherton got past Peeler the next lap, putting the 24T into fourth. Benji Legg took fourth place away from Etherton on lap 12 in his #84 and moved up to third with 7 to go. Despite furious charges the top 4 remained unchanged with Blake winning, Beckman second, Legg third and Patterson in fourth.
This was Dusty’s first win at Eagle Raceway. He came up from Hebron, Nebraska and said “I think I’ve only been here at Eagle 7 times. Once in a Sportmod back in 2002, a couple of times in a Modified and then this is my fourth time here in a Stock car”. I kidded him that it never hurts to start up front, to which he replied “I’ll take it! It’s a front row hero, but somebody’s got to start there. My car was really good tonight. I got some new shocks from them and they really seemed lights out. I knew to get to the front and try to run away. I’ve only been out a few times this year, so I’m not really in racing condition. First and foremost, I want to thank my wife and my children and my Mom and Dad. They’re my biggest supporters.” Dusty’s sponsors include McMillen Farms, IROC Race Cars, Meyerpold Hereford, Stone Cold Restorations, DSign Shop and Lester Buildings.
Next out were the Avid Realty IMCA Sportmods. The first attempt at a start was called back as the flag man didn’t like the way they jumped. The next try was halted when Jacob Swanson looped the 31S in turns 1 and 2, collecting Aiden Floyd’s 7F, the 96 of Gary Saathoff and the #7 of Lee Horky. When a lap was officially in the books your top 4 were Luke Williams’ 75, the 9 of Amber Cook, James Hines in the 31R and the 0 of Michael Sherwood. Chad Shaw spun the 93 out on the front stretch on lap 2 and the Choose Cone was sat on the front stretch. Sherwood moved up to third place on the restart but Chad Shaw got together with the 7V of Adam Vrbka, hit the front stretch wall and came to rest under the flag stand. Again, the Choose Cone was brought out. Matt Andrews moved up to fourth in the 22 and Sherwood advanced to third on the restart but Bobby Draper spun his #62 on the back stretch to bring out the Choose Cone again. Cook fell back rapidly on the restart with a flat tire, making your top 4 Williams, Andrews, Sherwood and the 44D of Derek Hall. Hall passed Sherwood the next time around to move to third. Cole Wayman also passed Sherwood the following circuit to put the V18W into fourth. 8 laps were left when Andrews snagged the lead away from Williams. 4 laps later, Theron Ahlman looped his 2A in turns 1 and 2 and the yellow lights were lit again in the corners. There was just 3 to go when Ahlman spun to a halt at the pit entrance after slamming into the implement tire there to slow the action again. The final change in your top 4 came on the final lap when Noah Williams passed Wayman. The top 4 were Andrews, Luke Williams, Hall and the 27W Noah Williams.
This was victory #1 on the season at Eagle Raceway. I told Matt that it was good to see him back at Eagle again, doing Matt Williams things. He said “We got to the point today where it was a ‘heck with it’ moment. We were letting everything fly and I wasn’t going to lift. It was rough and hammer down. I got into it on that first caution when I think everybody checked up. I was on the brakes and probably slid 2 feet and barely got into Swanson. I don’t know if that helped him go around or if he was going to go around no matter what. I’ll take the blame for that. I’m surprised that I didn’t get put to the back for that but I think it was just a racing deal there. We were able to get by Luke. He had a good run going but a couple of laps I went to the top to try and get around him but I started messing up running the top. I saw his nose once and went back down to the bottom. I want to thank my Mom and Dad, of course my wife because she sponsors watching the kids so that helps a lot. My son will be up bright and early in the morning asking to wash the car, so he keeps the car clean and helps with tires. There’s a whole village of us that keeps us going and I want to thank all of that village because without them we couldn’t do this and if they didn’t like it, we wouldn’t do it. I’m just glad that they’re having fun. I’m having fun tonight. It’s been one of those times where it’s not your year and so far it hasn’t been our year. Maybe here at the end of the year we turn it around; that’s all that we can hope for.” Matt’s sponsors include Skytop Towers, Strategic EMS, AllPro Heating and Air Conditioning, Underdog Designs, Big Red, James Hopkins and PBS Rentals.
The Nebraska Lawn and Landscape IMCA Modified Feature saw Aaron Pella lead lap 1 in the 3A followed closely by Tyler Harr’s 21T, the 27 of Clint Homan and Jaxon Saathoff in the #96. Homan and Saathoff both advanced 1 position on lap 2 with Saathoff grabbing the lead as Pella fell back to third the following lap. Nate Thompson got past Harr for fourth in his 3T on lap 5 but lost the spot back to Harr the next lap. On lap 8 Homan got past Saathoff for the lead with Thompson moving up to third and Pella regaining fourth place. Homan tangled with the 32 of Dillon Carlisle, becoming locked together. After getting untangled, both cars were taken off of the track behind wreckers. The Choose Cone lineup was Saathoff, Thompson, Harr and Pella. The restart saw Thompson get sideways in turn 4 and spin to the infield. Behind him a big pileup saw Brandon Verbeek’s 4B, the 81 of Mike Densberger, Bob Zoubek’s 5S, Bob Ruisinger in the #7 and Adam Wasserman’s 41A spin to the infield with John Saathoff’s 96J and Pella stopping on the front stretch. The Choose Cone lineup was Jaxon Saathoff, Shawn Harker in the 40, Harr and Cameron Thompson’s 2T. The restart saw Thompson get into Cameron Thompson collecting Densberger and Tracy Harr’s 21. The single file restart saw Jaxon Saathoff in the lead with Shawn Harker’s 40 second, Verbeek third and John Saathoff fourth. John Saathoff fell back rapidly the next lap allowing the 54 of Eddie Ingram to take over fourth. Harker passed Jaxon Saathoff for the lead with 7 circuits left. The caution flag was displayed with 6 to go as the 8A of Dustin Andersen hooked the rear bumper of Adam Armstrong’s #60, spinning them both and collecting Nate Thompson. The top 4 went unchanged to the checkered flag with Harker, Jaxon Saathoff, Verbeek and Ingram headed to the scales and tech area.
This marked 2 in a row and #3 on the season for Shawn. I asked him if he was going to make this a weekly thing and he stated “I want to make it a weekly thing! Not that you’re good to look at because I like women (laughing). We had a good car and a good track to race on. People were a little crazy tonight in the Mod feature, but we worked our way to the front after starting 11th. The Choose Cone helped us out a little bit and we had a wreck that took out a couple cars in front of us. I just kept my nose clean and worked my way to the front. I had a good race with Jaxon. We’ll always take another win.” Shawn’s sponsors include Roads Chassis, Speedway Shocks, Jet Racing, Patriot Crane and Rigging, Shark Bait Candy, “R” Cart Services, Noonan Industries, King Equipment, Patriot Heavy Haul, Tex Cattle. Speedway Racing Engines and Final Grade.
Tanner Dowty led the field back to the flag stand on the first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A in the 7T with Nick Jensen’s 48J second, the 65 of Brad Burhenne third and Matt Rotschafer’s 14R fourth. Burhenne moved up to second on lap 3 with Eric Chab putting his #11 into fourth place before passing Burhenne for third the next time around with Jensen falling back to fourth. Dillon Richards advanced his 24R into fourth place on lap 5. Lap 6 saw a Rotschafer make contact with the 17T of Troy Dowty and spin out in front of most of the pack at the end of the front stretch with Ben Becher’s B4 getting caught up in the mess and also stopping on the front stretch. The Choose Cone lineup was Dowty, Burhenne, Richards and Chab. Lap 7 saw Richards vault all of the way into the lead with Burhenne dropping back to fourth. Brayden Hurley cracked the top 4 with 10laps left, putting his #38 into fourth. Hurley moved to third the following circuit with Tanner Dowty also passing Burhenne to grab the fourth spot. Jensen got past Tanner Dowty to move back up to fourth with 7 to go. Hurley passed Chab coming to the checkers to make your top 4 Richards, Hurley, Chab and Jensen.
The win kicked Richards’ total on the season 11 out of 12 with the other race being a second-place finish. He said “We’ll take it! It took me a little while to get up front with guys sideways and hitting each other in front of me so I had to let off and be patient and when the gaps opened I took advantage of them. It weas fun.” I kidded him that he barely won by a straightaway to which he replied, “I guess we’ll have to pick it up next time.”
The finale was for the Nebraska Septic IMCA Racesaver Sprint Cars. They were the draw/redraw class for the night with an additional #2,500 added to the feature purse. It was $1,100 to win and $300 to start the A. Adam Gullion led lap 1 in the 91 with Brandon Horton’s 1B, the 32 of Trefer Waller and Stu Snyder’s 5 the top 4 on lap 1. Jack Thomas hit the turn 1 wall hard on lap 3 with his #63 making a slow easy roll onto its left side. The Choose Cone lineup was Gullion, Horton, Waller and Snyder. Snyder got past Waller on the restart for third with Cameron Thompson also passing Waller the next lap to put the 2T into fourth. Tyler Hendrickson’s 14T spun out in turn 1 on lap 7 with Jacob Dye’s 20D catching the Armco wall at the pit entrance and spinning to a stop just short of the fence guarding the pit area. The Choose Cone lineup was Gullion, Horton, Snyder and Waller. Billy Alley put his #11 into third on the restart with Waller retaining fourth place. Horton passed Gullion with 8 laps left but lost the position back to him the next time around. Cole Wayman moved past Waller with just 3 to go but Waller took the spot back out of turn 4 on the final circuit, making your top 4 Gullion, Horton, Alley and Waller.
Win #1 on the season for the former track champion. When I caught up with Adam after the races he managed to make me feel really old. I had joked with him about treating me like just another fan. He apologized saying “I’m sorry. I’ve known you most of my life. I’ve known you forever; since I was 18. I’m 39 and about to be 40 on Christmas Eve. This was my first this year. It should have been my fifth. I got my first sprint car when I was 16 and my first win here when I was 17. I did take one season off to get married and I’ve been running sprint cars ever since I started on the pole tonight, but the last few weeks I’ve been going 15th to second, 19th to second and 16th to second. We had a chance to win 2 weeks ago when I took the lead after starting 19th and the magneto died just as I took the lead. This place has owed me one this year but it’s owed me a lot more over the course of my career here.” Adam’s sponsors include Midwest Petroleum Equipment, Midwest Construction Solutions, Steve O, Ultrashield, Blood Performance Products, Maxim Chassis, Pro Shocks by MK, Brenning Painting, Big Pickle Trucking, Precise Roofing, Kansas Trophy Outfitters, Elevate Stand Co., Tornado Race Engines, Swirlfire Screen Printing, BK Motorsports and King Racing Products.
