Kilgore Conquers The ‘Burg
125 cars checked into the pits to do battle on the track. Mother nature washed out several area tracks on Saturday but graced the village of Luxemburg with beautiful weather for a gorgeous night of racing as we Celebrated the memory of former track promoter, Rick Goral.
The Village Kitchen IMCA Modifieds rolled out into the hot, humid night looking for the first repeat winner of the 2020 season. The 00JR car of Race Van Pay led the field out of the Showcase Kitchens turn number four to the green flag, Van Pay paced the opening laps of the event as Daniel Wilcox and Jame Tebon fought behind him for second. Van Pay pulled away and the battle behind him unfolded with a host of cars working their way from the back of the pack into contention. Shawn Kilgore quickly worked his way from tenth into second and set his Slick chassis machine to the top side to find the bite to work his way around Van Pay into the top spot. Dave Zeitler managed to charge his way into second from his 12th place starting spot. As laps wound down Zeitler gave chase but was unable to close the gap on the 90K machine. When the checkers flew Kilgore laid claim to his second feature win of the season. Zeitler brought his Z84 car home second, Brad Theys finished third, and Jerry Wilinski rounded out the top four.
Eric Malfroid led the IMCA Stock cars to the green and into the Paul J. Georgia turn number one, but it was outside pole sitter, Darren Otto, that captured the first lap. Malfroid, Tom Brumlic, and Larry Karcz Jr. immediately fell into a three wide battle for second place. Otto managed to work out to a slight advantage while the field behind him raced three wide two and three rows deep. After multiple laps of side by side by side action Chummy, Eric Arneson, clawed his way into second and went to work pursuing the race leader. Arneson was able to find the grip on the slick track to work past Otto and into the top spot, Devin Snellenberger worked from 11th into second but did not have enough to run down Arneson. Chummy notched his track leading third feature win of the season. Snellenberger settled for a second place finish and a share of the points lead with Arneson. Eric Malfroid fought back to finish third after being shuffled back earlier in the scrum while Darren Otto notched a season best fourth place finish.
The IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature had enough edge of your seat action and chills to fight off the heat of a late July evening in Wisconsin. Jordan Klemmer led the opening laps from his front row starting spot. Like the other feature races tonight the cars behind him fell into two and three wide battles around the track as drivers scratched and clawed their way for each position. Jayden Schmidt worked his way through the field running the high side. Coming out of turn number two the 24 car looked like it was launched out of a cannon as Schmidt pulled away from the three wide fight for second and shot directly into the lead down the backstretch. Cody Rass and Dennis Meisler fought hard to move into second and third while the X car of Chris Budzban was able to capitalize on a late race restart to move from ninth to fourth at the wire. None of them were able to challenge Schimdt as he rolled to his second feature win of the season and number seven overall at local tracks this year.
The Unified Dirt Street Stocks have put on a show week in and week out this year, tonight promised more of the same action. Joe Johnson worked quickly into the lead from his inside second row starting spot. The 11C Car of Adam Crapser steadily stalked his way through the field to slide his way into the top spot with just two laps to go. He paced the final two circuits to secure his first win of the season. Brooke Diefenthaler brought her car home a season best second, Chad Naze locked up a solid third, and Ford Malvitz brought his XXX car home fourth.
The Quietwoods RV Murder Hornet feature may have been the last of the night but it may have put up the best race of the event. Brett Deprez quickly put his 54D car to the front of the field from his outside front row starting spot. Setting up shop right behind the race leader Brandon Kaye, Tony Everard, and Calvin Stueck waged a three wide battle for the runner up spot. Everard eventually dropped out of the fight leaving Kaye and Stueck to duke it out for second. The duo ran each other hard lap after lap until contact coming out of turn two allowed Stueck to break away from Kaye and he set his sites on running down the race leader. A late caution bunched up the field and it looked like Deprez was in danger of falling victim to a hard charging Stueck. DePrez though was able to fend off Stueck and Kaye and took home his first career feature win. Stueck settled for second, Kaye third, and Brade Wedde came home fourth in his first appearance at the ‘Burg Speedway in 2020. The race ended under a scary red\checker flag as the 7 car of Scott Schlafke ended up backwards and on his side against the backstretch wall. Schlafke emerged from his car unhurt.
