Inside Line Promotions – SOMERTON, Ariz. (Nov. 14, 2017) – Alex Hill was fast and gained experience as she closed out her racing season during the three-day Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour finale at Cocopah Speedway last weekend.
Hill got off to a solid start on Thursday when she achieved her goal of making the A Main out of the stout 36-car field.

“We finished second in our heat and fifth in our qualifier, which put us starting 13th in the A,” she said. “Unfortunately, we missed the setup in the feature and dropped back to finish 20th.”

Friday night also began well for Hill as she placed third in her heat, which lined her up third on the starting grid in a qualifier.

“I had a bad start in the qualifier and dropped back a bit,” she said. “I was racing for fifth and made contact with another car, breaking my front end and putting us out of the race.”

Hill’s crew worked feverishly and was able to repair her car in time for the B Main, which she was slated to start fifth.

“My crew worked really hard and got the car fixed just in time for the B,” she said. “But they didn’t have time to change the setup from the heat race. The car didn’t handle as well as it could have and I dropped back a bit and finished eighth. I was really happy that we were even able to start the race.”

Saturday night saw Hill start third in a Last Chance Qualifier.

“I fell back and lost some spots on the start again,” she said. “That’s something I need to work on. I was racing for fourth most of the race until the guy I was racing with came down on me and we got together and I got sideways. I didn’t spin out, but I lost a lot of momentum. I was catching back up to him, but ran out of time since it was only an eight-lap race.”

A fifth-place finish relegated her to the B Main, in which she advanced from 11th to ninth place.

“We had a good car in the B,” she said. “I lost some positions at the start again, but I was able to make them back up plus gain a couple more. Not passing that car in the qualifier was really big. If I had passed him, I would’ve started seventh in the B. That would have given me a good chance at making the A since they took the top six.

“Our goal was to make the A and we did that on the first night. I wish we could have qualified for it the other nights, but that didn’t happen. We were fast most of the weekend and made some good laps. I’d say it was a good weekend overall.”
