Jeremy Mayfield doubles down at Carteret County Speedway
PELETIER, NC – Jeremy Mayfield doubled down in the Grand National Super Series doubleheader at Bobby Watson’s Carteret County Speedway on Saturday night.
Mayfield swept both races with late race passes in each race. The first race, he made the race-winning pass on hometown hero Chris Burns inside the final 10 laps and drove away for the victory. After an invert, Mayfield had to overcome adversity in the second race when an incident between Chris Burns and Chrissy Wallace stacked the field up, collecting Mayfield.
He was able to recover and work his way back to the front, taking the lead from A.J. Henriksen with 12 laps remaining in the race.
“We just stacked them up and everybody got into each other,” Mayfield said. “I thought the radiator got busted. We hit pretty hard. I wanted to make sure it was alright, fired it up, and it was, and we took off, cut the fender off of it and got better. This is by far the best car I’ve ever had. It’s awesome. Ran really good.”
With a pair of wins, Mayfield was able to add to his Grand National Super Series points lead as the series heads into its final race of the season at Dominion Raceway in October. The victories were also the first (and second) of Mayfield’s career at Carteret County Speedway.
“It’s double points down there so you never know what could happen,” Mayfield continued. “We could’ve fell out tonight and been in trouble. We were able to fight our way back and win the race but anything can happen from here on out so we’re not going to count our chickens before they hatch.”
Chris Burns finished in the second position in the first of two races, while A.J. Henricksen was runner-up in the second race.
Madhouse Invasion
Saturday night’s John The Greek Restaurant Equipment Battle at the Beach saw an invasion from the stars and cars of Bowman Gray Stadium’s Sportsman and Street Stock divisions, with Dylan Ward and Brian Sykes, Jr. racing their way to victory.
For Ward, who has experience in a Limited Late Model at Carteret County, the race was a perfect scorecard. Ward qualified on the pole and led all 40 laps en route to victory.
After the race, Ward said he will be back in December to compete in the Islander Hotel & Resort Christmas Clash.
“I feel like we’ve had that race won twice now and bad luck hasn’t played on my shoes,” Ward said. “This is one place I get around really well. I’m not perfect, I don’t get around every racetrack well, but I do get around this place well. I love this racetrack, I love this facility, and I love the people around here and the way they treat everybody and it means a lot to me.”
Nate Gregg finished second while Sterling Plemmons, Tommy Neal, and Brian Sykes, Jr. rounded out the top-five.
Sykes was victorious early in the evening in the Madhouse Street Stock race, passing Brad Lewis to take the lead with 10 laps remaining in the 25 lap sprint.
“It was a fun race,” Sykes said. “I knew Brad Lewis was gonna be fast and Billy Gregg and all the Dylan Ward Racing guys, I know they’re always going to be fast. I had a really fast racecar and it paid off. It’s awesome to see all these people come out and watch us.”
Billy Gregg finished second while Brad Lewis, Jacob Creed, and Andy Southern rounded out the top-five.
Scotty Benford was victorious in Legends while Mitchel Kerstetter picked up the win in U-CAR.
Carteret County Speedway’s racing season resumes on Saturday, September 27 with the Coldan Services Fall Brawl presented by Jersey Mike’s Subs.
