Starks Ties Career-Best Finishes at Jackson and Knoxville

Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 16, 2019) – Trey Starks tied his career-best result at both Jackson Motorplex and Knoxville Raceway last weekend.

Starks powered the Gobrecht Motorsports sprint car from sixth to second place during a Midwest Power Series and Midwest Sprint Touring Series heat race on Friday to open the action at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn. He then placed fifth in the dash before lining up on the outside of the second row for the main event.

“The last two times we’ve been there in a 360 we’ve been fast all night,” he said. “We had a lot of speed on Friday. We got to second fairly quickly within the first handful of laps. Overall, it was a really frustrating feature. Every time I’d get to Lee Grosz’s rear bumper the caution would come out. Then it’d take a few laps and the caution would come out again. They were imperfectly timed. I couldn’t get a long enough green-flag run to get past him. I felt like we were faster, but didn’t have the luck with the cautions or traffic.”

Starks finished second, which marked his third runner-up result this season.

The weekend wrapped up on Saturday at Knoxville Raceway, where Starks qualified 18th quickest and placed third in a heat race. That relegated him to the B Main, which he won to transfer into the back of the main event.

“We need to start timing better and putting ourselves in position to win at the end of the night,” he said. “We had a couple of good features and moved forward a ton. We can pass cars. But we need to help ourselves out by starting farther up front. Our qualifying effort wasn’t as good as it needed to be.

“We tried a few different things in the B Main and we were really fast. I got held up for about the first five laps of the main event by a couple of cars and really didn’t make any progress. So our 20-lap feature turned into a 15-lap feature really quick. Once I got by them it seemed like we could pass a car a lap.”

Starks rallied from 21st to 14th in the main event. He capped the night by maneuvering from 15th to seventh during a make-up feature. That tied his career-best 410ci sprint car finish at the track.

“We tweaked a few things for the make-up feature and had a good and maneuverable car,” he said. “We kept moving forward so that’s a positive for the direction of our team.”

Starks is scheduled to return to Jackson Motorplex this Friday and Knoxville Raceway on Saturday.
