Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (June 4, 2019) – Chris Schmelzle endured a frustrating night last Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway during a Summer Thunder Sprint Series event.

The trouble began in hot laps when the hood got knocked off the race car.

“I’m not sure if it was a mud clod or what,” he said. “I didn’t have any crew with me. It was just me and my wife. I didn’t have any help to watch the race track. We missed hot laps and thrashed to get the hood on the car for qualifying. We went out and didn’t see where everybody raced. Everybody was on the bottom and I ran the top.”

Schmelzle qualified 18th quickest. A fifth-place result in a heat race relegated him to the B Main.

“We were up to third and challenging for second when we broke a rod end on the front axle, shoving us up the race track,” he said. “That ended our night.”

Schmelzle will have the next couple of weeks off in preparation for the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup, which is hosted by Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., June 20-22. The event features the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

“We’re really looking forward to running the Dirt Cup and seeing how we stack up with the ASCS National Tour drivers,” he said. “Dirt Cup is always a fun event, especially with such a deep and talented field of drivers.”
