Key Earns Top-Five Result In First Sprint Car Race Since 2014

CALIFORNIA, Mo. – Returning to full-size sprint car action for the first time since September 12, 2014, it didn’t appear that Warrensburg, Mo. racer Kameron Key lost any ground on the few sprint car starts he had made. His fourth career start came on Saturday night at I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo., and Key made it memorable by collecting his first top-five.

Getting a call from car owner John Helm while eating lunch on Saturday afternoon, Key was headed to I-35 shortly after. A few bolts later and Key’s seat was installed in Helm’s No. 12, ready for the night’s action, his first behind the wheel of a 410ci-powered sprint. 13 WAR Sprint Car Series competitors entered the pit area, setting up two heat races. In the first heat, Key was scheduled to start outside the front row, but when the scheduled polesitter was unable to make it onto the track in time, he’d end up starting alongside his cousin, Clinton Boyles. The pair battled hard early on, but it was Key who would end up ahead. While former WAR champion Chris Parkinson snuck by for the win, Key completed the eight-lap heat in second.

On the lineup board for the 25-lap A-Main, Key was set to start from outside row three. Early on, Key battled for position for nearly ten laps before he was able to crack the top five. While taking the fourth spot shortly thereafter, he had company from Boyles in the later stages of the event. The duo once made contact, with Boyles coming out the better. In the end, Key followed his cousin across the line, scoring a fifth-place result.

Returning to his Waters Motorsports mount on Sunday night at Double-X Speedway, Key was one of just five micro sprint competitors in attendance; that number was lowered further after one competitor blew an engine in hot laps, but the show went on. From last on the grid for the heat race, Key picked up two spots to finish second. The feature result would prove to be identical from the heat race finishing order. Key came home with a second-place run, but ultimately took the lead in the season points standings.

Key would like to thank Everyday Energy, Bybee Lawn Care, and Mach 1 Chassis, as well as his family and all of his fans for their continued support.

Key is next scheduled to compete on May 21 at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo. in the Helm Racing No. 12 410ci wingless sprint entry, and on May 22 at Double-X Speedway in the Waters Motorsports No. 7JR 600cc micro sprint entry.
