Inside Line Promotions – LAKE ODESSA, Mich. (June 16, 2020) – Danny Sams III nearly picked up a top five last Friday at I-96 Speedway when he made his first start in more than three months.

The Sams LaMountain Racing driver rallied from midpack to contend for fifth place before a late incident relegated him to an 18th-place finish during the Great Lakes Super Sprints event.

“We put a 180 degree different setup on it,” he said. “It was completely new to us. We were fast in hot laps, but we qualified bad. In the heat we found more speed and passed one car.”

Sams III qualified 18th quickest. He then advanced from sixth to fifth place in a heat race to lock into the 15th starting spot in the main event.

“We found speed and I got up to sixth,” he said. “I went into turn three and lost all steering with three or four laps to go. I spun the car out on purpose so I wouldn’t hurt the car. Then another car ended up coming around and got into me, which broke the Jacob’s Ladder.”

Sams III was unable to finish the race after the incident.

“We were very happy we had so much speed in the car,” he said. “It was tough to pass and we drove through the field. It wasn’t a points deal; it was more of a learning experience for us.”

This Saturday offers another opportunity to learn as Sams III is scheduled to make his debut at Butler Motor Speedway in Quincy, Mich. The team is pulling his backup 360ci winged sprint car down to compete in the 410ci sprint car division.

“We want to go to a new track and try a new setup,” he said. “It’ll shake down the backup car to make sure everything is where we want it to be. We want to run decent. If we can move forward it’ll be a successful night.

“I also want to thank Jim Mann for letting us stay at his shop.”
