Justin Zeitner takes night 1 at Yankee Dirt Track Classic
By Anthony Ainslie (Farley, IA) -- The Malvern Bank and Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Model Series kicked off the 43rd annual Yankee Dirt Track Classic Friday night.
The tours headed to Farley, Iowa’s 300 Raceway for the Classic for rounds 11 and 12 of the 2020 season. The single-event car count record was broken as a massive field of 50 cars made the trip to Farley for the two-day race.
The 35-lap main event took a while to get going as a first-lap pileup slowed the race down. Six cars were collected in the wreck including Kyle Berck, who was second in the West Series points standings.
When racing got under way, Justin Zeitner took the opening lead while Tad Pospisil ran second. As the laps clicked off the scoreboard, former Yankee Champion Joel Callahan and hometown favorite Jason Rauen made their ways towards the front.
Tire wear became a factor in the race as points leader Tad Pospisil cut a right rear with 12 laps to go while he ran in second. Andy Eckrich also cut a right rear tire four laps later while he ran in fourth.
When the dust settled, it was Justin Zeitner leading all 35 circuits to claim his fifth Malvern Bank/Haulin’ with Hoker Trucking Super Late Model Series victory of his career and his first at 300 Raceway. Jason Rauen took second, and Joel Callahan scored his best finish of the season with third. Charlie McKenna was fourth, and Ben Schaller battled back from an early wreck to round out the top five.
Both tours go back at it again on Saturday for the finale of the 43rd annual Yankee Dirt Track Classic. The stakes will be high as the biggest winner’s check of the year is on the line, a whopping $10,000 top prize at the end of Saturday’s main event.
