Wissota Late Model Challenge Series
Glenz Gallops to Challenge Series $4k Payday at Red Cedar
The Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series powered by Momentum Truck Group, Freightliner, Western Star and driven by Minnesota Truck Headquarters rolled into the Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, WI on Friday night, August 8th and Jesse Glenz emerged victorious and added a $4,000 payday to his checkbook thanks to Galloping Ghost Motorsports and Transportation for his efforts.
A stout field of 37 WISSOTA Late Model competitors were on hand and saw Kevin Eder start the night by setting fast time with a lap of 16.120 seconds around the Menomonie, Wisconsin oval, while Glenz, Cory Crapser, Jake Hartung and Ashley Anderson topped the four qualifying heat races early in the night’s program. Joel Bennett and Andy Karl won the twin b-mains to set the feature field.
Anderson and Crapser earned the front row for the night’s $4,000 to win, 40-lap feature event with Crapser getting the upper hand on the initial start and leading the field into turn number one and lead the opening lap.
Crapser ran out front over the first four laps with Anderson, Eder, Hartung and Glenz inside the top five early. Great battles were ensuing inside and outside the top five early until the first caution flew on lap four, for a Todd Frank spin in turn two.
On the restart, Anderson fired off perfectly and stole the lead from Crapser and set off out front, while Crapser was trying to chase him down with Glenz slipping into third and beginning to make it a three-car battle out front.
Just behind the leaders, Hartung and John Kaanta were in a battle, as were AJ Diemel and James Giossi for position around the top five.
As the leaders began to approach lapped traffic out front, the best battle on the track was for the lead between Anderson, Crapser and Glenz as those three tightened up their battle lap after lap, while negotiating the slower cars at the back of the field.
Anderson led Crapser, Glenz, Eder and Giossi at the halfway point with many side-by-side battles ongoing throughout the field until the second, and final, caution flew on lap 24 for a Hartung/Kaanta crash on the backstretch, which eliminated the traffic the leaders were dealing with and set up a 16-lap chase to the checkers.
On the restart, Glenz pounced and stole the lead from Crapser and Anderson in turn two and blasted off into the top spot, which he would hold for the remaining 16 circuits to race to his fifth career series victory and first since 2021. Following the #7x to the finish line were Anderson, Crapser, Diemel, who stole fourth from Eder at the line to compete the top five.
Blake Adams won the WISSOTA Modified feature and Derek Nelson won the USRA Late Model feature as well to round out the night. The Midwest Modified and Hornet features were postponed due to the track’s curfew.
