VETERAN SMITH CARDS LATE MODEL WIN
Delbert Smith Holds Off Leonard for NCRA Late Model Victory!
Park City, Kansas – June 16, 2018 - Delbert Smith took the lead after a complete restart and held off race-long challenges by Dusty Leonard to claim Saturday night’s National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas presented by Precise Racing Products crate late model feature event at 81 Speedway in Park City.
Adam Popp and Tyler Davis started on the front row for the twenty-lap-feature but on the start, Jimmy Segraves, Adam Schrag, Chris Kratzer and Tony Foster got together to bring out the only caution of the feature.
The complete restart saw Delbert Smith jump into the lead from his third starting position and set sail from the rest of the field. But sixth-starting Leonard had other ideas of Smith running away with a victory has he would soon over take the runner-up position and set his sights on the leader.
Leonard would make several challenges at the leader, but the veteran Smith would not be denied as he would go on to claim his 20th career series late model victory, which puts him fifth all-time in series late model feature victories and just four behind Larry Phillips for fourth on career late model feature victories with the series.
Leonard settled a strong second while seventh-starting Daniel Smith came home third. Cory Dumpert came from his tenth starting position to finish fourth while current series points leader Brandon Givens rounded out the top five. Popp finished sixth while Kratzer and Schrag came back from their mishap at the start to finish seventh and eighth respectively while Jeremy Bishop and Davis rounded out the top ten.
The two, eight lap heat races for the fourteen-car field were won by Davis and Popp.
Givens will take a slim five-point lead over Delbert Smith and ten-point lead on Danial Smith into the tours next event, coming up next Saturday night (June 23) at Thunder Hill Speedway in Mayetta, Kansas for their second of five scheduled appearances on the season.
