Midwest Legends Dirt Series
Meet the Team: Mike Schmuhl
The Midwest Legends Dirt Series could not operate if it wasn’t for some very dedicated people. This article series will spotlight the men and women behind the scenes who keep the wheels turning and races going.
Today we meet the big man himself, Mike Schmuhl. Mike took over the series and has grown it into something he is very proud of. From late nights to early mornings, Mike has put a ton of work into the series and his efforts have been very successful. Let’s all get to know a little bit more about Mike below.
Name - Mike Schmuhl
Hometown - Beaver Dam, WI
Job outside of racing - President at COST, Inc.
Position in the series - President
How you got into racing - When I was young, approximately 4-5 yrs old, I had the opportunity to hang out with my aunt and uncle often. My aunt Brenda’s brother, Scotty Nietzel, just started his sprint car racing. We traveled all over, because I wanted to go with when my aunt and uncle went. I was fortunate to go as often as they would take me. Racing wasn’t in our family’s budget or interest. So I started Racing Snocross when I was 18. I raced that for about 4 years, traveling most of the National series until I had a lower back injury. After that it was time to hang the snocross helmet up. In 2009 I had an opportunity to drive a sport modified with Jack Jones. Jack and my father-in-law Jerry Jones were just starting to get involved in dirt track racing. After a mechanics race and my first actual race, I picked up a feature win at Dodge County Fairgrounds. After that, things unraveled quickly. Jerry and I bought a dirt Modified and then Hayden, my son, started racing ice oval snowmobiles at the age of 4. He did this with so much success until we ended that when he was 13. In 2021 we bought a legend car for Hayden and raced very limited that year. In 2023, the leaders of Wisconsin Dirt Legends Racing Series informed that they were not going to continue on. At that point I decided to take charge and start a new series based on the same premise.
Thoughts on the 2024 season - It was a great inaugural season. Everybody was new to their roles and trying to make it as smooth as possible. Overall, we can make many improvements, this will make it one of the greatest traveling series around. I felt like it was a great success.
Favorite memory of last year - this is a tough one. Probably being in the booth at 141 and hearing how impressed they were with our series.
Favorite part of the series - traveling to many different tracks and learning so much from all locations.
Mike is responsible for day-to-day operations for the series, including talking to potential sponsors, recruiting new drivers, and promoting the series among other things. Mike has been hard at work making the series best of 2025, and can’t wait to share what he has in store.
