Inside Line Promotions – NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (Sept. 10, 2019) – Justin Henderson and Mike Sandvig Racing ventured to Wisconsin last Saturday to compete in the 18th annual Jerry Richert Memorial at Cedar Lake Speedway.

It was a promising night with the Bumper to Bumper IRA 410 Sprint Cars before the team brought home a 14th-place finish after getting caught up in a late-race accident while battling for the lead.

“We had a lot of speed and we had a great race car,” Henderson said. “It was pretty much only our second full night in a new car so to come out and lead a bunch of laps, I can’t be too upset even though the finish doesn’t show how good we truly were.”

Henderson began his night by showing speed as he laid down a lap of 10.956 seconds, good enough for third quickest among 24 cars. He started fourth in heat race action and advanced two positions to finish second.

“From hot laps on we didn’t make many changes at all,” said Henderson, who was also competing in his own 360 sprint car. “With running two divisions, we honestly didn’t have time to do too much. It was just like go, go, go. But also the car was good enough that we didn’t need to do much and it showed in the heat race. We pretty much added fuel and just went out and the results were what we expected.”

Starting from the pole position in the A Main Henderson jumped out to an early lead at the drop of the green flag. He led for 26 laps before getting passed with four laps to go. The following lap, with the top three cars all battling for the lead, Henderson got a run exiting turn two and attempted to retake the lead. However, another driver was also going for the lead and the two banged wheels. Henderson spun out and ultimately finished 14th, ending a promising night in disappointing fashion.

“I was running a nice pace and I tried to pull a slide job on a lapped car and really let those guys gain on me,” he said. “We had a chance to get the lead back and unfortunately it was just two guys going for the same spot on the track and it didn’t work out. It’s disappointing as we had a car capable of winning.”

Henderson and Sandvig will be off this coming weekend as they prepare to return to IRA Series action Sept. 20-21 during the Casey’s Open Wheel Nationals presented by Sea Foam at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn.
