Wood Excited to Head West With Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour This Weekend

Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 29, 2013) – After a difficult weekend at the Short Track Nationals, Cole Wood is more than ready to climb back into his sprint car to erase the sour taste.

Wood is slated to compete with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour on Friday at El Paso Speedway Park in El Paso, Texas, and on Saturday at Southern New Mexico Speedway in Las Cruces, N.M. It will mark only his second visit to both tracks.

“I remember last year we did well in Las Cruces,” he said. “It was pretty heavy. I think we had a good run.”

Last weekend at the 26th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals Presented by Hoosier Tires, Wood and the more than 100 competitors battled challenging track conditions, weather and attrition at I-30 Speedway.

“I’m not sure anybody had a really good Short Track Nationals,” Wood said. “It wasn’t that the track conditions were tricky. It was so wet and one lane that you couldn’t pass anybody.”

The event started on Wednesday with the inaugural Short Track Nationals Open. After starting fourth in his heat race, Wood quickly advanced to third place and was battling for the runner-up position when he and another car collided. The impact knocked Wood to the infield and he finished with a 10th-place result.

That buried him in a C Main, which he finished ninth in to end his night.

Wood returned to the quarter-mile track for his preliminary night on Friday when the track was wet and fast. He finished where he started – seventh – in his heat race and ended eighth in his qualifier after another incident.

“In my qualifier we were rolling pretty good and some guy spun out in front of the field and wore out me and some guy behind me,” he said.

Wood was relegated to the back of B Main and he finished 12th to cap the night.

Preliminary night points were calculated and Wood returned to the $15,000-to-win event on Saturday starting fifth in an E Main. He advanced to place second and transfer to the D Main, which he started 14th. Wood then maneuvered to a seventh-place result, which was three positions shy of transferring to the C Main.

“Honestly for what the track was our car pretty good,” he said. “I thought we had a decent weekend for what the track was. I wasn’t happy with it, but I was pleased we could move around and pass some cars.”
