Cole Wood – Fighting Back at Independence!

(Bill W) June 4, 2014 – Cole Wood faced some adversity at Independence Motor Speedway last Friday night with the Sprint Invaders, but he overcame it to bring home a tenth place run. Rain thwarted any other opportunities to race, but the Auburn, California driver will be back at it in the #17w this weekend at Knoxville and Huset’s.

Starting inside row three of undoubtedly the toughest heat race of the night, Cole moved up to third at Independence. “I was able to get one guy on the start,” he says. “Carson McCarl was out in front of me, and I could kind of see the line he was running. I felt a lot better running the top while he was on the middle and bottom. I was able to get into third with Terry (McCarl) in front of me. He was pretty fast.”

The finish would set Cole up inside row five for the main event. “Our car was really good the first couple of laps,” he says. “We started ninth and think we were up to sixth or seventh. I think Russ (Hall) just entered the corner a little hot behind us. He got into my left side tires and we spun out. Unfortunately, he got on his head.”

The contact caused some nose wing damage, but Cole restarted at the tail of the field. “There is no work area with that series, so we had to race the rest of the feature with the nose wing down,” he says. “It was kind of tough on the cushion, but we started 22nd at that point and we were able to make it back up to tenth. We were good enough to pass some cars, but it definitely would have been a better run without the spin.”

Cole is planning on some practice laps at Knoxville with Craig Dollansky on Thursday. He talked about his season thus far at Knoxville. “It’s been going well,” he says. “We’ve had some bad luck, but we’ve also had some really good runs. It seems I’ve been able to pass more cars at Knoxville than anywhere else. That’s always good, but we’re looking forward to qualifying better so we don’t have all those cars to pass. I think if we can get our qualifying down and start up front, we can have a good shot at finishing there.”

He’s also looking forward to racing at Huset’s Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota on Sunday night. “I love Huset’s,” he says. “We ran there a lot last year. I’ve had some good runs there and some top fives. I made a mistake getting into the wall in the feature there earlier this year, but I’m looking forward to getting back.”
