Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (July 7, 2025) – Trey Starks was seconds away from another win at Skagit Speedway when disaster struck last Saturday.
Starks set himself up well during the 360ci winged sprint car portion of the racing program.
“We went out midway through qualifying and laid down a pretty good lap to be second quick,” he said. “We started fourth in the heat race and was able to win that. I got a good jump into second. The track was pretty slick and wide; how I like it. We were able to stalk the leader and make a move. That’s really important because going from fourth to winning the heat race will lock you into the best starting spot available, so that gave us the pole for the feature.
“We took off and felt pretty good. There were a handful of restarts. We got challenged on one or two, but we never lost the lead. From about the halfway point on it went green so we got into traffic. The pace was slowed down pretty good because the track was slow. I tried to be careful in traffic and not get too greedy. There were a couple of cars at the back that had good pace. Toward the end we got to another group of lapped cars. I got a good run on a couple of them. We took the white flag and going down the backstretch I got a good run off the bottom. I was pretty well beside one down the backstretch and figured they had seen me or at least knew somebody was down there. I wasn’t expecting that car to close the lane off going into turn three. He came down and we made contact and I spun out. When I realized what was happening I got on the brakes really hard and our wheels bumped. That put us to the tail for a green-white-checkered finish. I restarted 13th or 14th and got back to 10th.
“It was frustrating. I try to take accountability in every circumstance and there are some things I could have done different. I really didn’t think I was pushing the envelope at the time, but knowing what I know now I probably could have rolled into that corner different. I’ll add it to my mental notebook, noting the cars you are around and what they might do.”
The 10th-place result was Starks’ 15th top 10 this season. He now has a 64-point lead in the championship standings.
Starks will return to the track this Saturday for a 410ci winged sprint car show. He leads the championship standings in that division by 33 points.
