Macri Wins Bricker's Bash World of Outlaw Race
YORK HAVEN, Pa.: Anthony Macri feels like he is a fourth to seventh-place car when he rolls through the gates at BAPS Motor Speedway on a given night.
Good thing the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series visited BAPS on a Wednesday. It also probably helped that Macri is on a heater after winning the Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway last week.
The Dillsburg, Pa., driver and crew have been hitting on all cylinders, and that success continued in the Bricker’s French Fry Bash. Macri passed World of Outlaws point leader David Gravel on a Lap 7 restart and never looked back in recording his third World of Outlaws win of the season and a $12,000 payday.
“I can’t complain, obviously,” Macri said. “We have really good cars, right now. We took the one from Eldora and put that on the shelf for Knoxville and brought this one out, and we are good right off the bat with this one. I just think we have a really good baseline, right now.
“I put us behind in time trials, but these guys gave me a really good car in the heat race, and I was able to pound the top and get to second. We knocked the nozzle line off and had to change motors, but these guys didn’t give up and gave me a good car. It was just up to me to do my job from there.”
Macri lived up to his recent billing. Gravel jumped out front from his pole starting spot and was setting a pretty good pace despite a pair of early restarts.
Carson Macedo slowed on the backstretch on the seventh circuit, setting up another opportunity. Macri didn’t let this one go by, as he got a run and slid Gravel for the top spot through the first and second corner.
“I felt like the first two restarts, he was starting early in the corner, which made it difficult for me to peel down and stay with him,” Macri, 26, said. “I just kind of circled the top on the next restart to get a run down the frontstretch. I knew it was my one shot to slide him and make him come down the track.
“I don’t know how close it was, but I felt I was able to do that. Gravel in clean air would’ve been tough to beat, and it would’ve come down to traffic. So, once I got in front, I was able to run and hide.”
It wasn’t that easy. A seris of stoppages forced Macri to have to defend on restarts. The most notable incident occurred on Lap 13, when Danny Dietrich crashed and appeared to land on the frontstretch wall to bring out the red flag.
Fortunately for Macri, Bill Balog put a flyer on Gravel, as the two battled for the runner-up position. It allowed the Macri Motorsports entry to open up some distance on the rest of the field.
Gravel was able to hold off Balog and set sail after Macri. The frontrunners encountered lapped traffic on the 20th circuit and put on a show dicing through backmakers.
For Macri, the winning move came on Lap 25, when he split Skylar Gee and Chris Windom to give himself a bigger cushion. By the time the checkered flag fell, Macri was in front by .732 seconds.
Gravel settled for second, with Balog completing the podium. Buddy Kofoid charged from 10th to fourth in the final rundown, and Brent Marks completed the top five.
“I started on the front row of the feature, but I had to stay there,” Macri said. “I felt it was pretty important to back up last week. Nobody wants to win the Kings Royal and then come out and not qualify or run 18th.
“So, I definitely, put some pressure on myself coming into this weekend. The weekend isn’t over, but we will try and do our best at Williams Grove and ride the wave.”
