Wood Wrecks Late in Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour Race After Charging from Back

Inside Line Promotions – FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 24, 2013) – Cole Wood endured a rough start and ending to his night on Saturday.

After a late start to the Port-a-Cool U.S. Dirt Track Championship, Wood finished seventh in his heat race during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour race at Texas Motor Speedway.

“In our heat race I got up to fourth and tried to pass a guy on the bottom and he almost spun out,” he said.

That relegated him to a B Main, which he started ninth. Wood worked his way to fifth and missed a transfer to the feature by only two positions, which forced the team to use a provisional to advance to the feature. He started last – 23rd – but made up a lot of ground as the race wore on.

“We had a pretty good car,” he said. “I felt really comfortable up on the cushion until later in the race. I got up to 10th and was running the top where it was really rough. I hit a big hole and got on my head. I got in the corner, hit a big bump and a landed in the fluff where it was really hard packed and rough. I just went from there.”

The flip with eight laps remaining dropped him to a 17th-place finish and destroyed the frame.

The team put together a new car for this weekend’s Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., on Friday and Saturday with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.

“I’m excited about that,” he said. “I like that place. It’s one of the nicer facilities. We ran eighth there last time so hopefully we can improve on that.”
